The 26+2 series is great. Tip to toe, and inside to out, it challenges us and heals what’s most in need of healing.
But these exercises for the breath, body, and mind have depths that most of us never access, even after years of practice. This is partly due to one of the wonderful things about this series: anyone can do it!
Nothing crazy, nothing overly pretzel-like, no chanting or rolling of the eyes back into our heads. But the welcoming simplicity of the practice can also hide much of its potential benefits. We feel great after every class, sure, but, wait, there’s more! Let’s take a whole new look at our old friends, the 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises you only thought you knew.
A different perspective on the 26+2 sequence
In this workshop we’ll look at some of the essential instructions taught in this yoga style—“lock the knee,” “suck in the stomach,” “breath normally”—unpacking what they really mean and finding that, though effective, they might actually hide or make more difficult what we should really be doing.
Using slightly altered versions of the postures, this workshop will offer you shocking new perspectives on the series, like learning some surprising fact about a dear, old friend.
We’ll draw on techniques of breathing, muscle control, and visualization more often found in other contexts, like ashtanga vinyasa, yin, and Pilates, as well as similar poses from those styles, to give you a new toolbox to use in the 26+2 context.
I’ve been studying and working on this series for nearly 25 years, and it still reveals new aspects and approaches to me each and every time I practice. Let me share with you everything I wish I’d known right from the beginning of my journey with yoga, insights that have made me love this practice more with each passing year. The 26+2 series offers us a yoga practice that is sustainable, safe, and certain to give us the benefits we need. Let’s take it to the next level.
