Yoga is the Sanskrit word meaning “union of the body and mind.” Yoga combines the physical postures or asanas with the mental conscious breathing and the spiritual connection with universal consciousness.
As Yoga continues its popularity and grows around the world, more and more research studies have been conducted and are showing the mental and physical benefits of this ancient practice. It is now clear that Yoga has many scientifically proven health benefits, both physical and mental, such as:
- encouraging relaxation
- increasing flexibility & strength
- regulating blood pressure, lowering heart rate
- toning & nurturing muscles
- increasing levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)* in the brain
*With respect to mental health, practicing yoga regularly has been shown to increases the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter, in the brain. Low levels of GABA are associated with anxiety and depression. When practicing yoga we elevate the levels of GABA and become happier beings.
